Road, Street, Avenue, Boulevard, Lane, Drive, Court, Place, Plaza, Square, Crescent, Way, Alley, Trail, Motorway, and Highwayなどの英単語は、住所や道、通りの名前に用いられます。
Road, Street, Avenue, Boulevard, Lane, Drive, Court, Place, Plaza, Square, Crescent,は略号で、
Rd, St, Ave, Bld, Ln, Dr, Ct, Plz, Sq, Cresのように表されます。
日本ではあまり馴染みのない単語です。
今回は、これらの単語について、イラストと共に説明していきます。
Road
A route created to travel from A to B.
AからBへ移動するために作られた経路。
Street or Avenue
Streets (East to West) and Avenues (North to South) connect buildings together in a town/city.
Street (東から西) とAvenues (北から南) は、町や市で、建物と建物を繋ぐために作られた経路。
Boulevard
A wide street in a city that often has trees, grass, or flowers along the middle or side.
都市にある幅広い通りで、その中央か端に、木、芝生、花などがしばしば見られるもの。
Lane
1. A narrow rural road.
細い田舎の道。
2. A division of a road with painted lines.
塗装された線のある道路の区画。
Drive
1. A road shaped around the environment. (e.g. lake, mountain)
(池や山など) 環境の周りに作られた道
2. A private road leading to a property.
所有地に通じる私道。
Court or Place
A road that ends in a "cul de sac" (a road with no exit, or a "dead end")
「cul de sac」 (出口のない道または「行き止まり」) で終わる道。
Plaza or Square
A public, open area which often has trees, green areas, seats, shops, etc...
公共のひらけた場所で、しばしば、木、緑地、椅子、お店などがあるところ。
Crescent
A curved street of houses.
家々の中にある曲がった通り。
Way
A small side street that turns off a road.
道からそれた小さなわき道。
Alley
A small path between buildings.
建物の間の小さな細道。
Trail
A rural walkway, often through a field or forest.
野原や森林を通る田舎の歩道。
Motorway (UK) or Highway (USA)
A large, busy road with many lanes that connects town and cities.
町と都市を繋ぐ、大きくて交通量が多く、車線が多い道。
